Behind Brainshadow stands the musical chameleon Niklas Rundquist, with a long, colorful past.
He studied at EMS and violin for Herbert Konvicka, concertmaster for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Rundquist has composed commissioned works, such as music for films, documentaries and commercials, for example the vignette for Sandrew Metronome and other large companies. He has also created music for Cirkus Cirkör, Iodine Jupiter and various artists on the London scene (in the beginning of the 90s).
In the early 80s Rundquist participated on Lustans Lakejer‘s first record. During the same period of time, when Freddie Wadling was the bass player in The Leather Nun, Rundquist played the electric violin with the band. He has recently returned to The Leather Nun for occasional performances.
A collaboration with the musical genius J.P Cleve has, after several years, culminated in ShapeShiftingAliens. The duo has also worked with Nolan Cook from The Residents. Both Brainshadow’s and ShapeShiftingAliens’ records are released on The Sublunar Society. Brainshadow’s first release, the EP Brainshadow, came in the beginning of 2016.
In his working process Rundquist strives for a a certain state of mind, a journey into the unknown and enigmatical rather than applying any genre specific formulae. According to Brainshadow the music is more tonal, elaborated and cinematic than dark ambient, although there is a dark, gothic air to it.
